Rationale for this Report
This is a summary report with links to my various on-going projects. Detailed progress is shown on the sub-reports. This summary report should highlight whether my focus has become unbalanced or otherwise inappropriate to the achievement of my major goal, which is to obtain a PhD in philosophy in the next five years.
I have ignored the 3 days a week I work at HSBC, on the grounds that it is not relevant to my life-goals other than in providing an income. However, it is increasingly proving a distraction. The working world goes on at the rate of 5 days / week (7 in some respects) and not 3. I always carry a Blackberry and respond to emails on my days off, or dial in to fix problems or keep things ticking over. I’m not paid to do this, and it must stop.
This report and the sub-reports obtained by following the immediate links below show the current status. The report headings show the period or effective date the report is for. Earlier reports can be found by following the links to “Previous Published Version” (where appropriate).
Summary of Progress during January 2008
January 2008 was my fourth month back at Birkbeck and saw some revival of my fortunes there. Bridge is coming along well. I’ve revived my Mathematics1: project.
Time Divisions (Where, for “YTD” – Year to Date – the year commences in October 2007):
| Project | Month Hours | Month %age | YTD Hours | YTD %age |
| Bridge | 66 | 42 | 136 | 24 |
| Mathematics | 3 | 2 | 8 | 1 |
| Philosophy of Religion | 3 | 2 | 20 | 4 |
| Thesis | 82 | 52 | 336 | 60 |
| Web Technology | 3 | 2 | 60 | 11 |
Summary of Progress to Date
I now have five projects currently on the go. Last month I dropped the mathematical2, treating it as having been replaced by Bridge. However, the Yale astrophysics lectures I’ve been listening to sit more happily under Mathematics than Philosophy of Religion, so the project has been revived. Follow the hyperlinks for further details:-
- Research into Personal Identity3. This is the topic of my PhD.
- Studies in the Philosophy of Religion4. On and off, this represents the main preoccupation of my adult life (work and family aside).
- Development of Web-tools5. This project is intended to assist with the prosecution of philosophical research. It is fundamentally an enabling project, though one I hope will have general metaphilosophical implications. The above two projects are test cases of the method, as well as worthwhile studies in their own right.
- Bridge6: aim – achieve county representation in the next two years.
- Mathematics7: Revive / improve my mathematical competence with a view to studying for an MSc some time.
