Plug Note1
- Thesis Text:
- If we adopt the Psychological View2 of Personal Identity – which I don’t – then it is psychological factors that are important in determining our persistence criteria3.
- However, while these factors do matter4 to the survivor5, they don’t matter in the binary sense of “have I survived or not” unless we take the Psychological View6 and make such factors constitutive of personal identity. As an animalist7, I do not.
- Supporters of the PV8 - or even the CV9 - tend to stress the discontinuity between the psychologies of human and non-human animals10. Animalists11 tend to focus on similarities, or continuities, as an evolutionary argument for animalism12.
- Because Psychology is so important to us, it is important to consider just what is important in it, and how it is grounded in our brains13 and bodies14. The idea of the Embodied Mind15 is very important when we consider phantastical ideas such as Uploading16.
- We must consider not just memory17 but other psychological capacities, including character.
Further Remarks:
- Psychology (including the philosophy of psychology) is a very general subject and one important in its own right, and useful to have an understanding of, but not one that I can allow myself the time to focus on – especially given that animalism has it that “psychology is irrelevant to our persistence”.
- There are numerous other Notes in this general area, so I’ve tried to ignore those items that are associated with these when compiling the reading lists below:-
→ Psychological Continuity18,
→ Psychological Continuity – Forward19,
→ Psychological Criterion20,
→ Psychological View21
→ Psychopathology22
- I’ve ignored the classic psychological texts – eg. those by Sigmund Freud or William James – in what follows.

- Relevant Works cited above: No items to list.

- First, I’ve segregated out an absurdly long list of dubious items from Aeon24

In-Page Footnotes:
Footnote 24:
- These are generally of very doubtful relevance, but may throw up some issues on occasion.
- I’m not sure why I’ve flagged some of these as relevant to Psychology; maybe it was my default category. There are a lot of them!
- Most don’t even have Abstracts. Maybe this will encourage me to review them.
- There are probably very many others that I’ve not logged Papers for lurking in "Hains (Brigid) & Hains (Paul) - Aeon: 2019+".
