- Elizabeth Schechter is an associate professor in the department of philosophy and in the cognitive science programme at Indiana University Bloomington. She is the author of Self-Consciousness and ‘Split’ Brains: The Minds’ I (2018).
Notes
- Whenever you think you’ve reached the bottom of the barrel of dodgy views, you find another that’s even weirder than the others, more obscure and more difficult to criticise.
- It seems there’s a community of “plurals” who think of themselves as many people in one body. The rest of us have now to call ourselves “singlets”.
- I’d originally categorised this position as a form of Multiple Personality Disorder, but it seems not to be so. It seems that “plurals” are fully aware of, and have access to the thoughts of, the others sharing their body, and deny that these are just different aspects of one personality.
- The author doesn’t understand this position, but wants to “accept” it rather than just brush it off.
- I’ve recorded her book in my database as "Schechter (Elizabeth) - Self-Consciousness and 'Split' Brains: The Minds’ I (TOC & Chapter 1: The Unity Puzzle)", noting that it’s too expensive. It’s still £50.
